ABSTRACT

Abstract The Apple Germplasm Bank (AGB) of Santa Catarina Agricultural Research and Rural Extension Company - Epagri, AGB-Epagri, is the largest of the genus Malus in Brazil. Twenty-eight main accessions of this bank were virus screened through DAS-ELISA, RT-PCR and IC-RT-PCR during two consecutive reproductive cycles, and each accession showed latent mixed infection by at least two species, among ASGV, ASPV and ACLSV. The combined use of diagnostic methods helped overcome inconsistencies commonly found in apple virus detection and was shown essential for the AGB-Epagri can be safely used as a source of genetic variability and for the exchange of virus-free propagative material.

ABSTRACT

Remitting seronegative symmetrical synovitis with pitting edema (RS3PE) syndrome is a rare condition that occurs in elderly individuals. It is characterized by sudden onset of bilateral symmetrical distal tenosynovitis that accompanied by obvious swelling of the hand with pitting edema and absence of rheumatoid factor (RF). This disease entity sometimes presented as overlap syndrome with other rheumatic diseases and needed to be differentiated from those. However, if the diagnosis is confirmed, the response to steroid is good. The purpose of this report is to describe the case of RS3PE syndrome presented with bilateral hand dorsum edema in a middle-aged woman.

ABSTRACT

Context: Moist environment in the mouth varies and causes variable amounts of corrosion of dental materials. This is of concern particularly when metallic implants, metallic fillings, orthodontic appliances are placed in the hostile electrolytic environment in the human mouth. Components of diet rich in salt and spices are important factors influencing the corrosion of metallic appliances placed in the oral cavity. Aims: To study in vitro corrosion of orthodontic metallic brackets immersed in solutions of salt and spices in artificial saliva. Materials and Methods: Orthodontic brackets were used for corrosion studies in artificial saliva, salt, and spices using electrochemical technique and surface analysis. Electrochemical studies using different parameters were done in solutions of artificial saliva containing salt and spices. Photomicrographs from the optical microscope were also obtained. Results: Results of corrosion studies have clearly demonstrated that certain spices such as turmeric and coriander are effective in reducing corrosion, whereas salt and red chili have been found to enhance it. Surface analysis of small pits present on the surface of the as-received bracket will initiate corrosion which leads to more pitting.

ABSTRACT

Eosinophilic fasciitis is a rare disease characterized by diffuse fasciitis with peripheral eosinophilia and progressive induration and thickening of the skin and soft tissues. We report a 19-year-old female who presented with pitting edema in both lower extremities. She had a history of excessive physical activity before her symptoms developed. Physical examination revealed 2+ pitting edema in both lower legs. She complained of mild pain in both knee joints and feet, with no tenderness or heating sensations. Laboratory results were unremarkable except for severe eosinophilia. Parasite infection, venous thrombosis, and cardiac and renal problems were excluded. A magnetic resonance imaging study of both lower extremities revealed increased signal intensity in the subcutaneous lesions, consistent with superficial inflammation of the fascia. Mixed perivenular lymphoplasmacytic and eosinophilic infiltration in the subcutaneous lesion were observed on biopsy. The patient was treated with corticosteroids, resulting in remarkable improvement in both edema and eosinophilia.

ABSTRACT

Context: Teeth and restorations are subjected continuously to degradation in hostile physical and chemical environments, resulting in corrosion. Component of liquid or solid is an important factor influencing the corrosion of metallic appliances placed in the oral cavity. Aims: To study in vitro corrosion of titanium wires immersed in solutions of toothpaste and chocolate in artificial saliva. Materials and Methods: Immersion test and electrochemical studies using different parameters, including corrosion potential (E corr ), cathodic Tafel constant (βc), anodic Tafel constant (βa), corrosion current (I corr ), polarization resistance (R p ), and corrosion rate of titanium wires, were done in solutions of artificial saliva containing Colgate™ toothpaste and Amul™ chocolate. Photomicrographs were also taken. Results: The results showed degradation of titanium wires by electrochemical attack when they were placed in the hostile electrolytic environments provided in the experiments. Surface analysis of titanium wires showed pitting and localized attacks on the surface. Pitting corrosion was found in the titanium wires.

ABSTRACT

Introduction
Seifu, devised in 1992 by Xu, is a method of treatment through “pulling the skin”, unlike the approaches of treatment adopted in Shiatsu, massage, or acupuncture. This paper reports our recent evaluations of the effects of Seifu on the blood pressure, pain, and edema.
Materials and Methods
The blood pressure was measured before and after Seifu in 36 individuals (mean age : 78.6±6.6 years) who underwent Seifu for 5 sessions or more. The effects on edema were evaluated in 14 individuals aged 45-90. Changes in the severity of edema following Seifu were analyzed. The effects on pain were evaluated in two ways.
1) Effects on acute pain
The effects on pain arising from injection into the knee were evaluated in three groups of patients with osteoarthritis of the knee: Group A (injection after the application of Seifu to the acupuncture point Gohkoku (LI4); n=7, mean age: 72.8±2.8 years), Group B (injection after the application of Seifu to the area around the knee; n=198, mean age: 75.3±9.1 years) and Group C (injection after the application of Seifu to the acupuncture point Saninkoh (SP6) ; n=62, mean age: 75.0±7.5 years).
2) Effects on subcuate and chronic pain
Pain was evaluated before and after Seifu using a visual analog scale (VAS) in 103 patients with some subacute or chronic pain(n=594, mean age: 73.4±12.4 years).
Results
1. Blood pressure
The blood pressure decreased significantly in 5 and increased significantly in the normal range in 1 of the 36 subjects. No significant change in the blood pressure was noted in the other 30 subjects.
2. Edema
Seifu was effective against pitting edema. However, in pateints followed for long periods of time after the surgical treatment of breast cancer, the skin hardness decreased but edema showed no marked reduction. Seifu exerted no effect on Quincke edema.
3. Pain
1) Acute pain
Pain at the time of injection was not alleviated in Group A. Pain at the time of injection was alleviated in 73.3% of the subjects from Group B and 69.4% from Group C. This percenatge did not differ significantly between Groups B and C.
2) Subacute and chronic pain
Mean VAS±SD decreased significantly from 6.6±2.0 before to 3.4±1.8 after Seifu (p<0.001).
Discussion
Seifu was shown to be effective against pitting edema. In cases where lymph ducts and vascular walls are intact, edema is expected to be alleviatedl by the Seifu-induced activation of lymph system autotransportation and its milking action on veins.
Seifu seems to alleviate pain via the mechanism proposed in the gate control theory.
Conclusion
Seifu is simple to apply and effective against pitting edema and pain, without exhibiting adverse effects on the blood pressure.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Nail abnormalities may be associated with alopecia areata and nail abnormalities in alopecia areata are reported to range from 10%-66%. OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the clinical characteristics of nail abnormalities in alopecia areata, such as prevalence depending on sex, age and severities of hair loss. METHODS: Prospective analysis was undertaken by examining the finger nails of 424 alopecia areata patients and the nails of 465 non-alopecic patients were examined as controls. RESULTS: The number of the patients was 424(214 males, 210 females) and their mean age was 28.6 years (range 1-69). Nail abnormalities were noted in 98 (23.1%) out of 424 patients and in 24 (5.1%) out of 465 controls. According to age group, the prevalence of nail abnormalities was high at age under 9(31.7%) and at age of 10-19 (31.6%). The incidence according to severity of hair loss was 20.8% in below 50% of hair loss on scalp, 27.8% in 51%-100% of hair loss on scalp and 41.5% in 51%-100% of hair loss on the scalp and also involving body hair. The Frequent nail abnormalities were leukonychia punctata (8.5%) and pitting nail(8.0%). The other minor nail abnormalities were onychorrhexis, transverse ridging, trachyonychia, melanonychia, abnormality of lunula, onycholysis and koilonychia. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of nail abnormalities in alopecia areata was significantly higher than in controls and the nail abnormalities were more common in children. The more severe was the degree of alopecia, the higher was the prevalence of nail abnormalities. Leukonychia punctata and pitting nail were frequently found in alopeica areata in Korea. The examination of nail in alopecia areata patients may be helpful in expectation of prognosis.

ABSTRACT

RS3PE is used to describe patients who have peripheral seronegative polyarthritis and pitting edema, especially in a man older than 60. It is characterized by sudden onset, high sedimentation rate, lack of bony erosion, remission within 18 months and good prognosis. Whether the RS3PE is a unique disease or syndrome has long been discussed, but conclusion was not obtained. We describe a 72 year old man of RS3PE with a review of the literature.

ABSTRACT

About a third of the patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis have reduced arterial oxygen saturation and are sometimes cyanosed in the absence of any apparent lung or heart disease; There is a reduction of diffusing capacity without a restrictive ventilatory defect. The aim of this study was to determine diffusing capacities in patients with chronic liver- diseases. The diffusing capacities and arterial oxygen saturations were measured in 25 patients with chronic active hepatitis(CAH), 9 early cirrhotics (early LC), 36 cirrhotics(Child's class A) and 11 cirrhotics(Child's class B). The anterior tibial area was observed for pitting edema, and Thallium-201 test per rectum(shunt index) was done. Hypoxemia was not observed in all subjects. The number of cases with decreased pulmonary diffusing capacity (DLco) is 3/25(12.0%) for CAH, 3/9(33.3%) for CAH with early liver cirrhosis(LC), 17/36(47.2%) for LC(Child's class A) and 6/11(54.5%) for LC(Child's class B). The mean+/-standard deviation of Dlco(% predicred) are 93.1+/-12.1 for CAH, 85.7+/-12.3 for CAH with early LC, 82.2+/-14.7 for LC(Child's class A) and 80.4+/-6.9 for LC(Child's class B), There is a significant difference between DLco in CAH and that in LC(Child's class A)(p0.3) had significantly lower DLco than these with lower shunt index(0.3) or pitting edema. This may be due to an increased systemic blood flow shunt and an increased generalized interstitial edema. Pulmonary function tests including diffusing capacity may be useful as prognostic parameters in patients with chronic liver disease, especially in those with CAH or early LC.
